A Bit Of Give And Take To Reduce Waste
Looking for a wardrobe? Got a sofa you no longer want? Want to swap spare spoons for a new necklace? Award winning social enterprise Bright Green are holding a Give or Take Day at Normanston Park in Lowestoft on Saturday 14th June between 10am and 1pm.
Give or Take Days are a community waste exchange event – a chance for people to get rid of furniture and bric-a-brac they don’t need and to pick up something they do need. And it’s all free! By re-using things instead of throwing them away, we save on landfill space, reduce fly tipping and help to save valuable resources. Give or Take Days offer people the chance to pick up household items they may need.
The idea originates in Europe. In many European countries like Germany for example, a certain day each month is set aside for the collection of unwanted furniture. Householders simply put the items outside their houses and it’s widely accepted that people can help themselves. Refuse trucks come along at the end of the day to collect the bits and pieces that are left over.
Sophie Leggett, Give or Take Day Co-ordinator says, ‘over 250 people came to the last Give or Take Day in Lowestoft, it was a great success and almost 2.5 tonnes of unwanted items were diverted from landfill. People are always asking when the next one will be so it is great to be able to announce this new date which has been funded by Lowestoft Together.’
Almost anything that might be of use to someone else will be accepted on the day with the main exceptions being clothes, electrical items and paint or chemicals. If you don’t have anything to bring then just bring yourself and you might find something useful that you need!
If you have any questions or would like to arrange for a bulky item to be collected from your home call Sophie on 07799 437193.
