February 10 Policing in Suffolk + emergency support services August 10
Photo
February 2010 hosted one of the most popular Neptune’s in the Chamber calendar year, question time with the Suffolk Police. The Deputy Chief Constable Jacqui Cheer and the Chair of the Suffolk Police Authority Gulshan Kayembe were our guest speakers for the breakfast. Speaking about the tough decisions that need to be taken prior to setting the budget for 2010 / 11 and to find out how we feel about the level of policing in Suffolk. All the attendees were provided with inter-active voting equipment so that any questions asked could be automatically counted and viewed instantly.
With the increased demands on the police and the decreasing finances, these surveys are an important tool to finding out what the people think. The public has got high expectations and the Suffolk Police Authority are doing everything that they can to gain public trust and confidence.

Gulshan Kayembe, Chair of the Suffolk Police Authority spoke about the budget. The current budget is in line with inflation, but as the future financial climate is so uncertain and with the increasing demands on resources they need to pull in more funding. Suffolk doesn’t actually get in as much funding as Norfolk, and until we have a new government they won’t know if they will receive more.

For the second part of Neptune, we had a skills and education express networking session with representatives from the emergency services. Superintendent Andy Quantrell from the Suffolk Constabulary, Jon Southgate from Suffolk Fire & Rescue plus three fire-fighters from White-watch, Lowestoft and Dave Greggs representing the East of England Ambulance NHS Trust gave some of their precious time to talk to our local students. They all gave important insights into their chosen careers, how they got there and what qualifications you would need to get into each of the services. Rachel, Rudy and Simon from White-watch brought along one of their suits complete with breathing apparatus and highlighted their job as one of many in the Fire service. Andy Quantrell gave advice on the training involved in working within the police and in the community as a ‘special’. Dave Greggs brought along the type of equipment that an ambulance driver or paramedic carries. He explained to everyone what certain items were used for, and how much training you would need to do before becoming a paramedic.

Both parts of this month’s Neptune, were very interesting and informative in their own way. We would like to thank everyone for attending and hope you all took something away from it.
